WHO AM I?

Kia ora, I'm Kerry Lukies. I have a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and a Master of Science, both from the University of Auckland, and 8+ years of conservation work experience. I am passionate about conservation and love working to protect our native species. I am particularly interested in projects that aim to mitigate anthropogenic impacts such as introduced predators and habitat fragmentation and that help to restore native species and ecosystems. Outside of work I like to spend time in and around the ocean, hang out with my dog Squid and learn te reo Māori.

RESEARCH

Research can help to inform conservation management decisions. I have led several research projects and been involved in many more. My main research expertise is seabirds but I am also experienced in terrestrial and marine ecological research more broadly.

MONITORING

Monitoring the inputs as well as what has been achieved (outcome monitoring) is essential to ensure a project is on the right track towards achieving its objectives. To obtain robust data that supports and informs the project; outcome monitoring needs to be well planned, resourced and timely. Appropriate expertise is required to help design the study and collect, analyse and interpret the data.

PEST MANAGEMENT

A key component of conservation in Aotearoa New Zealand is the management of pests, in particular pest mammals. I have an in-depth understanding of mammalian pest management strategies and have been involved in pest control projects for over 6 years.

ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION

I believe that education and advocacy are crucial to achieving conservation outcomes in Aotearoa New Zealand. Teaching people about our native species and ecosystems, and why they need protection, can help to foster an understanding of the value of nature.
